Lake Minnetonka: 1000 Years of Maritime History & Nautical Archaeology

Thursday, April 7, 2016
7:00 p.m.
Wayzata Community Room (next to City Hall)

Have you ever wondered what lies on the bottom of Lake Minnetonka?

Join us April 7, 2016 at the Wayzata Community Room for the spring program of Wayzata Historical Society and learn the answers to this question.

Joining us will be Dr. Ann Merriman and Chris Olson, co-founders of Maritime Heritage Minnesota (MHM). Dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and conservation of maritime and nautical architectural resources, Merriman and Olson and their team have dived throughout Lake Minnetonka and documented their findings. To date, they have confirmed at least 48 wrecks resting on the lake’s bottom.

This program will highlight wrecks in the Lower Lake, including a barge owned by James J. Hill. Other boats with familiar names such as Como and Hopkins/Minnetonka, along with some lesser known names such as George/Excelsior, Hercules, and Priscilla will also be included. Video footage of several wrecks will be shown.
